Ketamine Infusion Therapy is a clinically-proven, safe, and effective treatment for mental health conditions and chronic pain. Treatment consists of the gradual, intravenous infusion of the medicine ketamine, an anesthetic approved by the FDA in 1970. When used to treat mood disorders, a much lower dose of ketamine is administered so patients are conscious and awake the entire time. At DK Infusions, patients receive a series of X 55-minute infusions over 2-3 weeks. Each patient is monitored the entire time, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience. Many patients experience significant relief from symptoms after just one infusion. However, the majority require at least three infusions before improvement. Patients continue to receive benefits sometimes weeks later. It’s crucial to complete the whole series for maximum effect and duration of relief. A major benefit of Ketamine is no long-term side effects.
Some nerve cells (neurons) in the brain involved in mood use a chemical (neurotransmitter) called glutamate to communicate with each other. The nerve cells need glutamate receptors in order to join in this communication.
In the brains of some people with depression, those nerve cells don’t get so excited by glutamate anymore. It’s as if the glutamate receptors are deactivated or weakened.
After people with this particular problem receive ketamine, those nerve cell connections get restocked with new glutamate receptors, so that the nerve cells can respond to it again.
Research suggests that though ketamine’s main action is in glutamate receptors, it needs opioid receptors to have its antidepressant effects, too.
